Client: Hexcel Ltd, Duxford DB&P's Services: Building Services Consultant Engineers
Over past decades Hexcel Ltd have relied heavily on an aging “site wide” steam installation, which having surpassed normal life expectancy was operating at an inefficient and uneconomical basis. Due to the age of the plant, the decision was taken to divorce Hexcel’s local steam requirements (encompassing specialist research and process works), from the existing site services; to be replaced in their entirety with a combination of conventional gas-fired boilers and modern steam generators.
The new gas fired boilers generally serve admin / office facilities with the LPHW heating installations comprising a mixture of fan convectors, radiators and supply AHU heater batteries. The new steam generators serve the laboratory and factory / warehouse facilities with specialist works dedicated to the development and production of carbon fibre, reinforcement fabrics and other such preimpregnated woven materials.
The multiple generators range in duty from 2000kg/hr to 5000kg/hr of steam operating at a pressure of 10.5bar g. To reduce the installation period and to minimise the down-time of live steam services, the generators and associated equipment were pre-fabricated off site, duly tested and commissioned prior to being delivered as skid mounted Plant Rooms. In this respect, it is estimated that the works programme was reduced by some 25%, an essential factor critical to the successful completion of a project on an extremely tight critical line.
