Cambridge University Press is the publishing business of the University of Cambridge - granted patent by Henry VIII in 1534, it is the world's oldest publishing house. However, with an increasing demand for the publication of books, journals magazines and study materials to be provided in electronic format, Cambridge University Press have over the years experienced a decreasing need to publish these documents in a paper format.
Subsequently, the vast in-house printing facilities synonymous with the University of Cambridge have to a greater extent become superfluous.
In keeping with the times, the Directors of Cambridge University Press have recognised the need to convert the former printing facilities to office space / highly contracted technical centres from which to manage the production and worldwide distribution of electronic data.
David Bedwell & Partners were employed to advise with respect to the associated mechanical and electrical services and provide detailed designs for the remodelling of the printing facilities to deliver a mixture of open-plan offices, cellular offices, admin. and utility facilities. Heating and “comfort” cooling to the open plan offices is provided via a central VRF reverse cycle heat pump unit – in turn this serves a mixture of ceiling / wall mounted indoor units. The indoor units connect to a series of “control boxes” which enables wasted heat (when in a cooling mode) and wasted colth (when in a heating mode) to provide a degree of “free” heat / colth to those areas operating in the converse mode.
