Catering Facilities – Arthur Rank Hospice, Cambridge
Client: Arthur Rank Hospice Charity DB&P's Services: Building Services Consultant Engineers
Arthur Rank House was the concept of Dr David Bratherton, a therapeutic radiologist at Addenbrookes Hospital, who determined to build a specialist hospital for patients in the final stages of terminal illness. The original hospital was opened in May 1981 at the Brookfield’s site in Cambridge and provided essential services and exemplary care to thousands of patients over a period of 35 years. However, it had become clear that the building was unable to cope with the everincreasing demands on its services and the fact that many of the key facilities that were no longer fit for purpose.
The decision was taken in 2013 to construct a state-of-the-art hospice on the outskirts of Cambridge, set in a green and tranquil site with good transport access. The hospice was handed over to Arthur Rank’s Team in 2016 – two weeks ahead of programme and on budget. The building was very quickly in full operation – providing a spacious, attractive and therapeutic environment: designed with great consideration for the patient’s needs with vastly improved amenities.
The in-house catering facilities provide a comprehensive range of meals, designed to satisfy specialist medical, ethnic and personal dietary requirements. It was deemed important that the patients, visiting friends and relatives alike could share in the food preparation and cooking experience; subsequently there is a viewing section between the café / dining room and the kitchen. As consequence of this open plan aspect, the mechanical ventilation system has been significantly simplified – extract air is drawn away directly above the cooking and pot wash areas via a range of induction canopies, the filtered / tempered supply (make-up) air is discharged into the café and dining room to provide a highly efficient cross flow ventilation system. In this respect, the complexity of associated ductwork has been reduced which has in turn resulted in increased ceiling heights adding to the open and airy aspect of the rooms, in turn creating a very relaxing environment.
